Understanding Zen Arbitrage: Book Arbitrage on Amazon
Vova: So, Bill! We're all curious about knowing about Zen Arbitrage and exploring how it relates to book arbitrage on Amazon.
Can you break it down for us? I'm a private label seller, and I create products, usually in China.
We work on improving them, branding them, and shipping them to Amazon FBA for warehousing.
But I'm curious, what exactly is book arbitrage?
Bill: Oh, I'm glad you asked! Picture this: when we talk about arbitrage, we're essentially tapping into a market's potential to make a profit for ourselves.
Now, in the world of book arbitrage, we use Zen Arbitrage to find hidden gems - books that are being sold at rock-bottom prices.
Once we discover these profitable books using our software, we send them to a Prep Center, where they'll be prepared for shipment to Amazon's Fulfillment Centers.
And guess what? We sell these books at FBA prices, making a sweet profit along the way!
Manually, it's a very hectic process but Zen Arbitrage does the heavy lifting for us.
It tirelessly scans through the millions of books available on Amazon, pinpointing those being sold directly by merchants at jaw-droppingly low prices.
We snag these books and then turn around to sell them on Amazon FBA at a higher price.
It's like finding buried treasure and cashing it in for a tidy sum! But hey, we're not limited to Amazon alone.
We also encourage our fellow arbitrage enthusiasts to explore other markets like eBay and various book marketplaces.
Who knows, you might stumble upon an even better deal elsewhere!
So, in a nutshell, book arbitrage with Zen Arbitrage is all about hunting down undervalued books, utilizing Amazon as our primary platform, and flipping them for a handsome profit.
It's a thrilling adventure that combines the love of books with the excitement of entrepreneurship.
Vova: That's awesome, man! So, just to clarify, Zen Arbitrage is all about physical books, not digital ones, right?
We're talking about buying actual books from one store, sending them to a Prep Center, and then off to FBA, am I right?
Bill: You got it, Vova! We're all about those good old-fashioned physical books.
No ebooks or Kindles in our realm.
And here's the juicy part: so far we've discovered that the real goldmine lies in university textbooks.
Do you know why?
Students are in a rush to get their hands on the books their professors demand.
They can't afford to waste time searching through thrift stores or hunting for the cheapest option.
They need those books ASAP.
So, what do they do?
They opt for FBA books because they can get them delivered within two days, just in time for their assignments.
And guess what?
They're willing to pay a premium for that convenience!
Vova: Ah, gotcha, man! It totally makes sense now!
Zen Arbitrage Tutorial
Vova: Alright! Now let's talk more about physical books and Zen Arbitrage.
How exactly does Zen Arbitrage help us in this whole process?
You mentioned something about book scanning.
Can you show us how it's done?
Bill: Absolutely! Let's walk through the process together.
When you first open up the Zen Arbitrage software, this is what you'll see:
This is where the magic happens in Zen Arbitrage.
It's the heart and soul of the whole system.
In the upper part (see the screenshot below), we have the search parameters, where you set your preferences to explore the vast Amazon database.
And once you've done that, the results appear in the bottom like magic!
Now, let's talk about the Search bar on the top-left side of the screen.
As visible, you can sift through the search results by various options, like Publisher.
Let's say you want to focus on selling books from a specific publisher.
Or maybe you're on the lookout for books related to a particular subject like psychology, biology, or even algebra!
In that case, you'd search by Title or Keyword. Anddd, if you've got books lying around at home and want to check their profitability, you can search by the ISBN (International Standard Book Number).
Now, when I do my initial search (and I do about three or four of them daily in my quest for profitable books), sometimes I strike gold right away, and other times I need to do multiple searches.
But here's a pro tip: for my first search, I usually leave the search box empty.
Why?
Well, it's simple.
By not specifying a publisher or keyword, I cast a wide net.
With Amazon's extensive book collection, I want to maximize my chances of finding as many profitable books as possible in one go.
Still, don't worry if you want to put something in that search box.
If you need a list of publishers or textbook subjects, we've got those handy resources available.
However, for the initial search, I personally leave that box empty.
So, this is pretty much how we kickstart our book-hunting adventure using Zen Arbitrage.
Now, check out these sliders.
They're here to make your life even easier.
You can use the first slider to choose your desired price range.
Let's say I set my slider to a budget of $5 to $75 per book.
This means I'm looking for books that I can buy within this price range and then sell at a profit.
Take a look at the results.
They fall within that range, but they might not be listed in strict order of price.
Why?
Well, the software takes into account additional factors like shipping charges.
Also, note that when sellers list their books on Amazon, not all of them offer free shipping.
So, as you can see, the first book is priced at $7.18.
It might be the case that the book is worth 5 dollars, but it comes with a shipping charge of $2.18.
As we scroll down, you'll notice another book available for $6.84 in the "Used" column.
The book might be worth $5 with a shipping charge costing $1.84.
It varies from seller to seller.
That's why you see the results ordered based on my request for the $5 to $75 price range.
Moving forward, the books will start to pick up speed, but we always begin with those $5 gems.
That's what I'm willing to spend, whether it's a $5 book or as high as $75.
Now, here's an insider tip: when Amazon is selling a particular book, you'll never be able to sell a used copy for a higher price than what Amazon is selling a new copy for.
Keep that in mind!
However, if you come across a $5 book that Amazon is selling for a whopping 65 dollars (you can set Amazon's price in the second slider), you've hit the jackpot!
In this case, you can price it just below Amazon's rate, let's say around fifty-five dollars.
Selling a $5 book for 55 dollars?
That's a fantastic profit range.
But Amazon doesn't sell every single book out there.
So, as you browse through the results, you might come across listings that say "no offer" or indicate that Amazon doesn't have that particular book available.
If you do so, don't worry.
When Amazon does have an offer, you'll see their price, and you can decide if that's what you're aiming for.
The third slider allows you to choose the price range of brand-new books.
As for me, I'm primarily focused on finding used books, so I don't set the slider for new books.
If I were in the market for new books, I'd adjust this slider accordingly.
But for our initial search, let's focus on used books within the range specified in the slider.
This way, we ensure that the prices align with what I'm willing to pay.
And in this dropdown menu shown in the snapshot below, we have the "Average Rank" of the books being sold.
I've set the rank at 1 million.
Why, you ask?
Well, let me explain.
First off, I typically don't purchase books with a rank as high as 1 million.
Instead, I usually aim for books with ranks between 400,000 to 500,000.
But here's the catch – When it comes to book ranks, a rank of 1 million means the book sells approximately one copy every two to three days.
Now, I know in the private label world, you're not competing against a whole lot of other sellers since your product is unique.
But in the book realm, it's a whole different ball game.
You might find hundreds of sellers offering the same book on a single offer page.
But don't worry!
Even with a rank of one million, you still have the potential to make sales.
It's difficult to sell products having a rank of one million as a private label seller.
But with books, a rank of one million means you can still expect to sell two to three copies every few days.
So, if you can find a book with minimal competition and a rank (BSR - best seller rank) of around one million, you just might find some sales coming your way.
You can check it if you only want to focus on textbooks.
Personally, I don't check it because I want to cast my net as wide as possible.
By leaving it unchecked, I get a chance to discover profitable books beyond just textbooks.
Who knows?
There might be a leadership book or an exciting novel waiting to be found!
In this initial search, I prefer to keep my options open, so the "Textbooks Only" option is a no-go for me.
Now, the only other filter I use is this nifty slider over here.
The "Used Offers" filter allows me to limit the number of people selling the books I'm interested in.
Take a look down here in the "Used" column.
You'll notice there are only 13 offers on one book and 14 offers on another.
If I set the slider above too high, let's say at 150 people, things can get pretty crowded.
Everyone starts slashing their prices by just a penny at a time.
And while it's great news for the consumers who get super cheap books, it's not so great for us sellers.
After a while, nobody's making any profits because we're all caught up in that price war.
So, I usually set this slider at 50 or lower.
In this particular case, I've set it at 45. And hey, do you see those little drop-down menus?
You can type in any number you want to compete with.
The same goes for the prices you see here.
These are just the settings that I personally use.
Once you've got all your preferences in place, click "Apply Filters," and let the page load with the results.
Now, here's a little time-saving trick for you.
If you find a set of settings that you really like, click "Save" and give it a name.
The next time you come back, you can simply click on one of your saved searches, and all those settings will be automatically applied.
No need to type in numbers all over again.
Pretty neat, right?
Alright, once the results come back, I've actually pre-loaded this page to save us some time.
Believe me, there's a ton of information here.
So, let me break it down for you.
In the "Used" column, you'll see the current price you can buy the book on Amazon.
Now, we're going to compare that to the FBA price to see if there's a gap between the two.
And guess what?
We're looking for those profitable gaps!
And let me tell you why it's important.
See the screenshot below.
If I buy a book for $7 and then sell it for $12, there's no profit to be made.
Once I factor in my expenses like the Prep Center fees, shipping costs, and Amazon's fees, it all adds up.
So, what am I looking for?
Well, my experience has taught me that if I find a book here, I want the FBA price to be about three times higher.
Why?
Simple math, my friend!
It's all about doubling our money.
Let me break it down for you.
Let's say I stumble upon a book worth 10 dollars.
In that case, I want it to sell for around thirty dollars on FBA.
Now, if I find a $20 book, I'm aiming for it to sell for around 60 dollars.
Here's the logic: Amazon takes about a third of your selling price as fees.
So, by setting my sights on three times the purchase price, I'm ensuring that I not only recover my initial investment but also double my money.
It's a sweet spot that keeps the profit flowing.
Now, I'll scroll down the results to rapidly scan the Used price compared to the FBA price.
I'm on the lookout for books that fall within that three-times range.
Ah, here's one!
It's priced at $11.19, and it's selling for a sweet $38.99 on FBA.
For now, I'll mark it as "Seen."
Don't worry, I'll explain why in just a bit.
At this stage, I'm just swiftly scanning for books that hit that three-times mark.
Ah, another one catches my eye!
$13 dollars to sell for $39. I'll mark it as seen for now.
I'm going back and forth, evaluating the potential profitability.
Now, what about this?
A six-dollar book selling for $19.
That might be worth a closer look.
And here's one for approx $7 with a selling price of 25 dollars.
Now, we're talking!
Oh, and look at this gem - 13 dollars to sell for 49 dollars.
That's the kind of gap we're after!
Now, let me clarify.
The prices you see in the Used column are the used prices on Amazon itself.
So yes, we buy the used book on Amazon and then resell it on Amazon FBA.
It involves a little bit of shipping.
First, you get the book shipped to your Prep Center, and then it's off to the Amazon Fulfillment centers.
Sure, there are shipping fees involved, but nothing's ever free, right?
The price you see here already includes the shipping to your Prep Center.
So, it's the total cost to buy the book and get it ready for sale.
And the price on the right?
That's the price you can sell it for on FBA.
It's all about finding that sweet spot.
Now, I don't want to spend too much time on this back-and-forth scanning.
I've got some nifty next steps to show you.
But for now, my focus is on comparing these two columns and identifying those profitable gaps.
Once I've gone through the initial search and marked a bunch of books as seen, I'll head over to "All Results" and click on "My Reviewed."
This feature reloads the page with only the books I've marked as seen.
Now, instead of dealing with a whole bunch of books, I've narrowed it down to the ones that caught my eye.
Today, for the sake of time, I'll focus on just a few, but usually, I end up with around 15-20 books to evaluate.
Now, the first thing I want to check is whether Amazon is restricting me from selling any of these books.
Because with books, some publishers have restrictions on how many sellers can offer their books.
When you first start, you'll need to apply and request permission to sell certain books.
But don't worry, as you gain experience, you'll face fewer restrictions.
We've made it easy for you to check restrictions right within Zen Arbitrage.
Just click on the three dots shown below, and then "Check Restriction."
And ta-da!!! 🎉
It will load Amazon's page to let you know if you can sell that book.
In this case, it says "Sell this product," which means I'm good to go.
I'm not restricted from selling this book.
So, I'll go back and check the next one.
Now, this book comes back with a message saying, "Not Available."
That means I'm restricted from selling it.
If I had a larger batch of books to review, manually checking restrictions on each one could be time-consuming.
But guess what?
We've got your back!
We have the Zen Arbitrage extension that you can plug in, and it will automatically check restrictions for you.
It will even highlight the books you're restricted from.
That's a major time-saver, especially when you're dealing with a whole page of 50 books to review.
So, keep that in mind.
Assuming I can sell all these books, the next step is to evaluate their ranks.
I'm looking at the Average Rank, which gives me a sense of how well the books are selling.
As I mentioned earlier, I typically aim for books with an average rank of around 400,000 to 500,000.
It's a sweet spot that has proven to be profitable for me.
Now, within Zen Arbitrage, we have a fantastic tool called Keepa charts.
These charts provide valuable insights into the book's sales history.
With a simple hover over the "Average Rank," a Keepa chart pops up, giving me a visual representation of the book's sales performance throughout the year.
Let's take a closer look at one of these books.
Ah, see here.
The Average Rank remains pretty consistent, indicating that this book sells well throughout the year.
In fact, I can see the same trend for each of these books.
That's the beauty of analyzing average ranks and using Keepa charts.
It helps me make informed decisions based on the book's sales history.
Now as we've narrowed down our selection to some promising books, it's time to take a closer look.
Imagine you spot a book listed for $13, and you're wondering if you can actually buy it at that price.
Well, fret not!
Simply click on the ISBN.
Zen Arbitrage will whisk you away to the Amazon page, where all the offers for that book will be displayed.
And there it is.
The book is listed for $9.21, with an additional $4 for shipping, bringing the total to $13.21.
Now, it's time to assess the market and decide if it's a good buy.
I can use the Filter option up here to see if the Prime offer (the lowest FBA offer) for this book is currently $50.
If that's the case, I'm in luck!
I can purchase it for $13 and then turn around and sell it on Amazon for $50.
Looking at the results, it seems that the used copies are priced around $50.
But before I make any decisions, I'll go back to Zen Arbitrage and check out our built-in calculator.
This tool automatically fills in the used price I'm buying the book for.
I know I can sell it for $50, and let's say my Prep Warehouse charges me $2 to prepare the book.
After considering all the fees from Amazon, my profit comes out to be $21.23.
That's on top of the cost of the book!
When the book sells for $50, Amazon will pay me around $34 to $35.
That's a pretty sweet deal if you ask me!
Now, let's talk about how Keepa charts can be instrumental here.
Here is another book listed for $9.21, and I'm thinking of spending $14 on it.
I can easily add it to my cart and take a look at the actual Keepa chart.
Keepa charts provide additional information about a book's sales history, and they can be quite useful for making informed decisions.
We do have other add-ons available, but let's keep things simple for now.
If I go back and click on "All Items," it will reset everything, and I'll have to reconfigure my settings and charts.
See below.
That's the basic process of using Zen Arbitrage.
It's all about identifying profitable books, comparing the used prices with the FBA fees and prices, making sure you're not restricted from selling, checking the potential profit, and then hopping over to Amazon to make your purchase.
I'll go ahead and add this $9.21 book to my cart and proceed from there.
The process would be pretty much the same.
And still, if you feel stuck anywhere, know that we offer comprehensive training resources.

We believe in empowering our users with the knowledge and support they need to succeed.
Now, while we're on the subject, let's talk about the various ways you can make money on Amazon.
The possibilities are endless!
Some sellers opt for private labels, where they create their own branded products.
Others engage in wholesale, purchasing products in bulk and reselling them.
And then there's us, the arbitrage enthusiasts! We specialize in online arbitrage, which involves finding profitable items online and sending them to an Amazon fulfillment center to make a profit.
It's a convenient and exciting way to leverage the power of e-commerce.
And with Zen Arbitrage in hand, you don't have to manually search through Amazon to find books.
Sure, Amazon has its own search feature, but with our software, we've streamlined the process for you.
You simply input your budget, set your parameters, and click the "Apply Filters" button.
In a matter of moments, the software will work its magic and present you with a list of profitable books that align with your budget and criteria.
It's like having your own personal book-finding assistant!
Whether you're starting with a modest budget of a few hundred dollars or have a more substantial investment of a few thousand dollars, success is within reach.
People have achieved great results with arbitrage, regardless of their budget size.
It's all about finding the right opportunities and leveraging the power of the software to uncover hidden gems in the book market.
Now, let's circle back to the Zen Arbitrage dashboard.
The top-most bar in blue color is the Menu.
Here, you'll notice various tabs such as the Community, Training/Support, and Marketplace.
These tabs are your gateways to an abundance of valuable resources and connections.
Vova: Can you elaborate on the Community and Marketplace tabs?
We briefly discussed training and support, but I would love to hear more about these aspects.
Bill: Absolutely, Vova!
The Community tab takes you directly to our lively Facebook private group.
It's a vibrant community where you can connect with fellow Zen Arbitrage users.
You can ask questions, share your experiences, and read valuable insights from others who are actively using the software.
It's a supportive space where you can find inspiration, learn from others' successes and challenges, and build meaningful connections.
We have around 5,000 members in the group, all passionate about book arbitrage and eager to help one another.
Now, let's talk about the Marketplace tab.
It's an exciting feature that offers you a different way to leverage the power of Zen Arbitrage.
Imagine this scenario: you find a profitable book, but maybe you don't have the time or resources to purchase it, send it to a Prep Center, and invest your own funds.
That's where the Marketplace comes in handy.
In the Marketplace, you can list the profitable books you've found and provide the information to potential buyers.
They can purchase the lead from you for a small fee, usually around one or two dollars.
This way, someone else can take advantage of the profitable opportunity you discovered without the hassle of searching for books themselves.
It's a win-win situation, and it's an excellent option for those who prefer to save time and still benefit from the potential profits of book arbitrage.
But that's not all!
We also have additional features to enhance your experience: Tracking, Account/Upgrades, and Z-Bay.
The Tracking feature is like your own inventory management system.
It allows you to keep track of your purchases and listings in a convenient and organized manner.
You can easily monitor which books you've purchased, how much you sold them for, and the profits you've made.
It's a handy tool to stay on top of your book arbitrage business and ensure you have a clear overview of your progress.
The Account page — this is where you can access various add-ons and additional resources to further optimize your Zen Arbitrage experience.
It's your hub for exploring and unlocking supplementary tools that can support your success.
Oh, and speaking of success, we have a new tool called Z-Bay!
While it's still in development, Z-Bay is designed to help you uncover profitable opportunities on eBay.
It works similarly to Zen Arbitrage, but instead of searching for books on Amazon, it scours eBay for cheap books that you can flip and resell on eBay for a profit.
It's an exciting extension of our arbitrage capabilities, and it's especially beneficial for eBay sellers based in the United States who can have the books shipped directly to their homes for listing on eBay.
For our international sellers, using Z-Bay on eBay might require utilizing a Prep Center to store and manage the books.
This is because the shipping process can be a bit more complex when you're outside the United States.
But don't worry, we have resources and guidance to help you navigate through it and make the most of the opportunities.
Well, that's pretty much everything about Zen Arbitrage!
We've covered the ins and outs of this powerful tool for book arbitrage.
From setting your search criteria, finding profitable books, checking restrictions, evaluating ranks, and even exploring the Menu tabs, you now have a solid understanding of how Zen Arbitrage works.
Remember, it's not just software; it's a gateway to financial opportunities.
With its user-friendly interface, extensive training resources, and supportive community, Zen Arbitrage is ready to empower you on your journey to success.
