3 Expert Tips for Creating Awesome Product Packaging
Vova: Hey there! Today, we’re going to share three super helpful tips for creating great product packaging.
I’ve got Simon here with me.
He runs a factory that makes packaging for all kinds of businesses and products.
Let’s dive in!
Simon, thank you for joining me.
It’s great to have you here!
Could you share your top three tips with us?
We’re all looking for packaging that helps us sell more and, hopefully, make some good money.
Simon: Hi, thanks for having me.
Hello, everyone! I’m Simon.
I’m really passionate about creating great packaging.
Our company focuses only on making packaging.
We don’t make the products themselves.
The packaging we make is a product on its own.
We really care about designing packaging that feels special and gives the customer a luxury experience when they see it.
So, what I want to go over today are three main tips for making packaging really stand out.

Tip #1: Focus on Design and Structure
Simon: The first tip is design, the second is sustainability, and the third is choosing the right raw materials.
Now, why did I pick design first?
It’s because design isn’t just about how the packaging looks.
It also includes the structure.
Different products need different types of packaging structures.
It’s not only about adding a cool feature, like a fancy sleeve or a creative way to open the box.
The structure should match what the product needs to communicate.
For example, does the packaging need to feel like a gift box that makes the customer excited?
Or should it feel more like a medicine box that’s clean and serious?
These are totally different structures, with completely different vibes and messages.
Right, so structure is very important.
It’s actually the first part of the design process — choosing the right structure for the product.
Once you’ve figured out the structure, then you can move on to things like company colors and how to tell the brand’s story through the design.
Design is a really big topic.
Honestly, we could probably talk about it for hours.
But if I had to sum it up in one idea, it would be this: Try to tell your brand’s story as clearly as possible through the design.
Use everything you can — colors, visuals, artwork, finishes — to help communicate that story to your customers.

Tip #2: Make Sustainability a Priority
Simon: The second thing I really want to highlight is sustainability.
In my view, sustainability has three key parts: design, raw materials, and the supply chain.
Starting with the design, it’s best to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to colors and finishing.
Simpler designs are usually easier to recycle and better for the environment.
When it comes to raw materials, there are now many eco-friendly options available.
These days, we really don’t need to add extra coatings or laminations just to make the colors look stronger or more vibrant.
In 2024, printing technology has come a long way.
There are plenty of great choices now that let us create beautiful, high-quality packaging that is also 100% eco-friendly.
So it’s important to think carefully about the materials you choose.
And the last part of sustainability is the supply chain.
This actually connects back to the first thing we talked about, which is structure.
If we don’t carefully think about the structure from the start, we can end up with packaging that’s bigger than what the product really needs.
Bigger packaging means a larger footprint.
It takes up more space in the shipping container, more space in the warehouse, and even more space on store shelves or in the customer’s home.
All that extra space adds to the environmental footprint, which isn’t eco-friendly at all.
So these are the three areas I think about when it comes to sustainability: design, raw materials, and the supply chain.

Tip #3: Choose the Right Raw Materials
Simon: The last tip I want to share is about selecting the right raw materials.
So, we already touched on raw materials when we talked about sustainability, but I also want to look at it from a slightly different angle.
This time, I want to focus more on choosing the right raw materials for your product, not just from an eco-friendly point of view, but also from a quality and design perspective.
When you think about raw materials, it really breaks down into three main sections.
The first is the type of paper you use.
The second is the kind of art finishing you add.
And the third is the selection of the packaging components.
Let’s start with the paper.
When you look at a piece of packaging, there’s paper on the outside and usually paper on the inside as well.
Today, there are thousands of different types of paper available. They come in all kinds of textures, thicknesses, colors, and finishes.
Some papers feel rough, some feel smooth, some are thick and sturdy, and others are thinner and more delicate.
The type of paper you choose really matters because it affects the way your packaging looks and feels to the customer.
Now, if you’re buying packaging from a basic factory, they might not pay much attention to these details.
They’ll probably give you something that works, but not something that truly enhances your product.
On the other hand, if you work with a company that’s passionate about packaging, they’ll focus on these smaller details.
They’ll help you choose the perfect type of paper, the right thickness, and the right texture to match your brand’s story and create a better experience for your customers.
Next is the art finishing.
This is another key element that adds a sense of luxury and quality to your packaging.
There are so many finishing options out there — things like embossing, foil stamping, spot UV, and many more.
The possibilities are almost endless, and it can feel overwhelming.
That’s why it really helps to have someone with experience to guide you through these choices.
Finally, all these elements — paper, finishing, components, structure, and design — need to work together.
When done right, they create packaging that not only protects your product but also communicates your brand’s message and gives customers a great impression.
That’s what makes truly awesome packaging.
