Having money stuck in your Amazon account can feel stressful.

Sales are happening, reports look fine, yet the payout just doesn’t come through.

For many sellers, this creates confusion more than panic because Amazon rarely explains the hold in plain terms.

The key thing to understand is that withheld funds are usually tied to a process, not a dead end.

Amazon follows a sequence internally, and if you don’t respond in the right order, money can stay locked longer than it should.

Guessing, opening random cases, or sending emotional messages often leads nowhere.

In this guide, I break down a clear, four-step path sellers can follow when Amazon refuses to release funds.

Each step builds on the previous one and is based on real-world legal insight from David Miller, who works directly with Amazon sellers on payout and disbursement disputes.

The goal here isn’t to pressure Amazon blindly, but to approach the situation in a way that gets attention from the right teams at the right time.

If Amazon is holding your money, there is a structure to follow and knowing that structure changes how you move forward.

Step 1: Appeal to Reinstate Your Account

If you have a suspended account and Amazon is holding your funds, the first thing you should do is submit an account reinstatement appeal.

In many cases, funds are withheld specifically because the account is deactivated.

Reinstating the account often results in Amazon releasing the withheld money.

This is the simplest and most direct path to resolution if suspension is the cause.

If you're unsure which Amazon teams to contact during this process, I compiled a full list here: How to Get an Amazon Account Reinstated (Secret Amazon Email Addresses You MUST Know About)

Step 2: Submit a Disbursements Appeal

If your account is active or reinstated, but Amazon is still not releasing funds, the next step is to submit a funds-specific appeal.

Don’t go through general account support for this.

Instead, you need to contact Amazon's Disbursements team directly.

They are the team that deals with payment holds, payout delays, and disbursement disputes.

Make sure to include:

  1. A clear summary of the issue

  1. Any case IDs or relevant transaction details

  1. Proof of compliance or resolution (if previously requested)

This appeal is separate from your general account appeal and goes to a different department inside Amazon.

Step 3: Contact Amazon’s Outside Counsel

If the Disbursements appeal fails and funds are still not released, the next step is to escalate the issue through Amazon’s legal team.

This involves sending a pre-arbitration letter to Amazon’s outside counsel, which is one of the top law firms Amazon works with.

This letter formally outlines the issue and your attempt to resolve it, and acts as a final notice before legal action is taken.

The letter should:

  1. Be written professionally (legal help recommended)

  1. Explain the issue in detail

  1. Include the total amount in dispute

  1. State that you're prepared to escalate if no resolution is reached

This step often prompts serious internal review and can result in settlement before arbitration becomes necessary.

Step 4: File a Demand for Arbitration

If none of the earlier steps work, and if the funds in dispute are significant, the final step is to file a demand for arbitration.

Arbitration is a legal process, but it’s more informal, faster, and cheaper than full court litigation.

You’ll present your case to a neutral arbitrator who can legally compel Amazon to release the funds if the case is strong.

Points to keep in mind:

  1. Only pursue arbitration if the value is worth the legal fees and time.

  1. Evidence and documentation are critical.

  1. Legal assistance is strongly recommended at this stage.

Final Note

Withheld Amazon funds are not always final.

There is a structured process Amazon follows, and if you respond step-by-step, you increase your chances of getting your money released.

Use the proper channels, be patient but firm, and escalate when needed.

Legal options exist.

Use them wisely.

Until next time.
