In my latest conversation, Jane from Chinese Tiger joined me to share her best tips for saving money and getting the most out of your product samples.

In this article, I’ll break down our chat so you can order samples the smart way and save money from day one.
Ready to get started?
Let’s dive in!
_____________
Is It Possible to Save Money on Samples
Vova: Jane, I want to talk about product samples for a moment.
So, basically, as e-commerce sellers — especially when we're launching a new product — we always need to get samples first.
And I've heard there are ways to actually save money on that, right?
There's a process or a strategy that can help us cut down the cost.
Could you walk us through that a bit?
Jane: Yes, definitely. First off, samples are super important, and here’s why.
You should always order a sample before placing a big order.
Why?
Well, for one, it lets you check the actual material and overall quality of the product.
That’s key.
There have been so many times when we ordered samples from, say, three different factories — and guess what?
The samples all looked like totally different products, even though they were supposed to be the same.
That happens because factories may use different materials, or package the product differently.
One might include an instruction manual, while another won’t.
So, testing the sample lets you spot all those differences before it’s too late.
Secondly, it's really important to check how your logo looks when it’s printed on the product.
Ordering a sample helps you see that firsthand.
And third, you’ll want to use your sample to create promotional content.
You can take high-quality product photos or even shoot videos for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook.
That way, you can start promoting the product before it even arrives in places like the US or Canada.
How to Save Money on Samples
Jane: Now, about saving money — when you're talking to Chinese suppliers about samples, be sure to ask if they offer a refund policy for them.
For example, if you decide to place a bulk order with that supplier later, they should refund the sample cost or at least deduct it from the total order price.
That’s a common practice.
But if you’re ordering samples from multiple suppliers and don’t end up buying from all of them, then yeah, they likely won’t refund you.
Also, another way to cut costs is by not shipping the sample to your home country.

Jane: You can work with a company like ours — we're based in China — and we can inspect the product and even take all your marketing photos right here.
That way, you save on shipping and also on time, since you’re not waiting for delivery.
How It Works
Vova: So let’s say we’ve found, like, five solid factories that we’re seriously considering working with.
We decided to get samples from all five.
Now, instead of shipping each sample to ourselves, can we send them to your team?
And then your people can visually check and show us what’s going on — help us figure out which sample is the best one?
Jane: Yes, absolutely.
Our team can take lots of detailed photos and film plenty of videos of each sample.
They also describe each product to me directly.
Most of our team members don’t speak English — well, one of them does, but not very well — so they explain everything in Chinese to me, and then I go over all the details with you.
We’ll discuss what they found, and then you can decide how you want to move forward with each of the factories.
Vova: That’s pretty cool.
It’s really helpful for sellers who are at that stage where they’re testing samples and want to keep costs down.
Because honestly, if you're ordering five different samples and ship each one separately to your own country, the shipping fees can add up quickly — it can get pretty expensive.
Is There Any Way to Check Actual Product Samples
Vova: By the way, I’m curious about if you offer a service where people can still get the actual samples to touch and see.
Like, if we send all the samples to your address, can you pack them into one box and send them together as a single shipment?
Jane: Yes, yes — we do that all the time.
It's something we usually handle for clients.
We collect all the samples in our warehouse first, then pack them into one parcel and ship them together.
That way, it’s definitely cheaper.
Also, we work with a Chinese logistics company that usually offers better shipping rates compared to companies in places like Ukraine, the US, Canada, and so on.
So clients end up saving both time and money with that approach.
Vova: All right, perfect.
I think we’ve pretty much covered everything about samples.
