If you’ve been selling on Amazon for a while, you’ve probably come across both SmartScout and Keepa.
They often get mentioned in the same breath, but the truth is, they were built for slightly different purposes.
Keepa is famous for its in-depth price tracking and historical charts, while SmartScout goes far beyond that with a full bird’s-eye view of Amazon.
As an active Amazon seller myself, I’ve used both tools in different contexts.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how they compare in terms of features, pricing, accuracy, and overall usability, — so you can figure out which one makes the most sense for your business.

Why Compare SmartScout and Keepa?
At first glance, these tools don’t look like competitors.
Keepa is a Chrome extension and web app that lets you track historical product performance.
SmartScout, on the other hand, is a full SaaS platform that allows you to research categories, brands, sellers, and even keywords.
But here’s why sellers put them side by side:
Both tools are used for product research and decision-making.
Both tools help you understand sales and market trends.
Both tools are affordable entry points compared to bigger suites like Helium 10 or Jungle Scout.
So the real question is: which one should you be spending your money on right now?
Let’s break it down.
SmartScout vs Keepa: Quick Overview
Here’s a simple snapshot of how they compare:
SmartScout: A browser-based tool that gives you a complete view of Amazon, from top-level categories down to search terms. It includes features like brand research, seller maps, subcategory research, and sales estimation.
Keepa: A lightweight but powerful extension that tracks product price history, sales rank history, and buy box data. It’s excellent for spotting deals and validating a product’s historical performance.
Think of it this way: if Keepa is like looking at a single tree and how it’s grown over time, SmartScout is like looking at the whole forest with maps, data layers, and paths leading you to potential opportunities.
My Walkthrough on SmartScout (with Scott Needham)
Now, I know that sometimes seeing is better than reading.
That’s why I invited Scott Needham, the creator of SmartScout, to my YouTube channel.
Together, we went step by step through the platform, exploring its most useful features for Amazon FBA sellers.
Here’s the full video tutorial if you want to watch us in action.

Who Should Use Keepa?
Keepa is best if you’re:
Validating a product’s history before placing an order with a supplier.
Tracking prices over time (for up to 10 years, in fact).
Looking for quick discounts using its daily deals and price drop alerts.
It shines in showing you whether a product has been stable, volatile, or seasonal.
This is critical if you don’t want to get stuck with inventory that only sells during a certain time of year.
That said, Keepa has limitations.
It doesn’t give you insights on brands, sellers, or category-level trends, so it’s more of a validation tool than a discovery tool.
-: Gentle Reminder :-
Who Should Use SmartScout?
SmartScout is built for sellers who want to go beyond product validation and actually discover new opportunities.
Instead of just looking at one product’s history, you can scan through entire categories and find out:
Which brands are dominating in a niche.
What products are gaining traction.
Which sellers are pushing those products.
The keywords customers are actually using to search.
This makes it much more of a strategic research tool than Keepa.
You’re not just asking, “Has this product sold before?” You’re asking, “Where are the gaps in this market, and how can I step in?”
For example, SmartScout’s Seller Map gives you a visual representation of sellers across the Amazon marketplace.
You can literally see who sells what, how much they sell, and whether they’re retail arbitrage, wholesale, or private label.
This is something Keepa doesn’t even touch.
👉 If you’re curious about how the Seller Map works in detail, I’ve broken it down step by step in this video:
SmartScout vs Keepa: Feature Comparison
Pricing: SmartScout vs Keepa
Cost is another factor that often shapes the decision, so here’s how the two compare.
Keepa: Offers a free version with limited features, while the full version costs around €19/month (about $20 USD). It’s affordable and works well if you just need quick checks.
SmartScout: Offers different pricing tiers depending on your needs. Plans start at $29/month but go up depending on how much data access you want. I’ve actually broken this down into exact monthly costs in my SmartScout Pricing Plans Review, so you can see which tier makes the most sense for you.
Now, with my partner discount, you can try SmartScout at 25% off for 3 months, which gives you a bit of breathing room to test it fully.
Which One Is More Accurate?
Both tools are known for solid accuracy, but in slightly different ways.
Keepa pulls directly from Amazon and shows you the raw history of what’s already happened. Its charts are highly reliable.
SmartScout uses algorithms to estimate sales and revenue, similar to other tools like Jungle Scout or Helium 10. The difference is, SmartScout combines those estimates with brand and category-level insights to give you context.
So if your question is “Has this exact ASIN been selling well?” → Keepa wins.
If your question is “Which niches and brands are worth exploring?” → SmartScout wins.
Can You Use Both Together?
Yes, and many sellers do.
Keepa and SmartScout don’t really cancel each other out, they serve different roles.
SmartScout helps you spot opportunities by scanning entire markets, while Keepa validates those opportunities by showing the sales history of individual products.
Here’s a simple workflow sellers often use:
Start with SmartScout to explore categories, brands, or keywords and narrow down potential products.
Move to Keepa to double-check whether those products have steady demand, stable prices, and a consistent buy box.
This way, you’re covering both sides: the big-picture strategy and the fine-grained detail.
Final Thoughts
Keepa is best for: price tracking, buy box data, and historical sales validation.
SmartScout is best for: market discovery, brand analysis, and scaling your research to find new opportunities.
Using both together gives you the broadest advantage: SmartScout to find and Keepa to confirm.
