Helium 10 Black Box Tutorial: How to Find Profitable Niches on Amazon
Serving as a venue for around 9.5 million global sellers, Amazon is deemed a leading eCommerce platform.
However, a high market size also means that there is a lot of competition. If you’re a beginner trying to make your voice heard or struggling to rank higher in Amazon’s search results, I’ve got just the solution for you!
My name is Vova Even, and I am a veteran Amazon seller.
I've been in the sales trenches for over 6 years now. However, when I first entered the field in late 2016, there weren't many resources accessible to streamline the sales process for newcomers like myself.
Plus, since selling on Amazon has always been a struggle, I've tried out just about every tool that's been developed to make the process less tedious.
To fast forward to the present, I have cut my list down to a select few tools that I most like using and recommending to my fellow businesspeople.
A side note: I'm always adding useful resources to the list, so you can be confident that I'll only suggest what's currently most effective. 😉
Sooooo, Helium 10 is one of the first tools I've ever used, and I continue to use it to this day.
It's an all-inclusive Amazon Seller tool with a wide variety of features that help sellers of all skill levels dominate the marketplace.
In this article, I'll go over its Black Box tool and show you how to use it to find untapped markets on Amazon.
Besides this, I’ll discuss foolproof tactics to ease product research and talk about how you may utilize the Helium 10 Xray tool.
I also have valuable Helium 10 discounts and coupon codes for you!
Psst… Not an avid reader? Not a problem! Below is a video that expands upon the points made in this article. Enjoy watching! :)

Now let's start with the Helium 10 Black Box tool — it's a one-in-all Amazon product research tool that helps you find high-quality products based on the criteria you set.
From finding products and lucrative keywords to unsaturated niches and searching via competitors, the tool provides five unique ways to power up your Amazon selling game.
Hey! I have a full-fledged playlist devoted to Amazon product research.
Step 1: Using Keywords to Optimize Search
Black Box is a super easy-to-use tool. Once you launch the Helium 10 dashboard, its button will display in the upper left corner of your screen.
Upon clicking it, you’ll discover the following features:
Products
Keywords
Competitors
Niche
Product Targeting
Click on Keywords…
This option allows you to hunt for phrases having a specific search volume that meets your criteria.
What I mean by "specific" is that you will define what you need and then use Black Box to locate only the products that fit the bill.
The Keywords section is one of the favorite tools that Bradley Sutton from Helium 10 likes to use for his product research.
Bradley Sutton shared some Amazon product research hacks for us in this blog post.
Anyhow, back to business.
The criteria can be adjusted using various aspects discussed below. You can set a maximum or minimum value, or both for each of the following.
My ideas for numbers here are based on my experience, feel free to change them and play with them.
Actually.. Do it! :) Test stuff out! Let’s go!
Search Volume - This option allows you to look for keywords with a defined search volume per month. I recommend sticking to a maximum of 20,000 to find keywords that aren’t too competitive. But definitely feel free to use higher/lower numbers.
Monthly Revenue - This option allows you to search for products that generate your defined monthly revenue. I recommend using a minimum of 5,000 to ensure you find profitable products.
Price - This option allows you to set the price points as per your requirements.
Review Count - This lets you adjust the number of reviews you want the products to have. I recommend you set it between 10 and 100 to ensure that the product is selling organically and is not a newly launched one.
Besides these options, you will find the following advanced filters under Helium 10's primary “Niche” filter. There are other filters aside from what I’ll mention here.
Categories - This indicates a particular sub-category listed on Amazon.
Keyword Search - This button allows you to search for a particular keyword. Again, reserve this filter for when you know the product or niche you’re looking for.
Shipping Size Tier - This feature allows you to narrow search results based on their size tier. It varies from small standard to large oversized.
Monthly Sales (Units) - This button enables you to filter search results based on monthly demand.
Best Sellers Rank (BSR) - This allows you to find products that match your required BSR needs.

Watch this video I made a while back to learn more about the Helium 10 Black Box tool and its potential uses in high-level product research:

Now, to find less saturated niches set the search volume to a minimum of 2,000, monthly revenue to 5,000, price between 10 to 100, and review count between 10 and 100.
That's what I did in my video, you can, of course, always play with the settings and explore the results.
Once the values are set, hit the “Search” button and wait for Black Box to load the search results. As it does, the time is to surf through the results and discover lucrative items.
Using the previously mentioned parameters on the Black Box dashboard, I discovered a rather interesting niche titled "Mermaid Party Supplies".
It featured 11,920 yearly sales, 52,974 search volume, 1,085 monthly sales, $18,193 monthly revenue, and 19.21 sales to review.
If you come across a market like this or one that piques your curiosity even more, click on the “Actions” button and select the “View on Amazon” option to see how the product is actually doing in the here and now.
Step 2: Using Xray to examine the Niches
The next step is determining if the product is worth it by launching the X-ray tool.
It's a Chrome extension by Helium 10 that you need to add to your browser before using.
If you don't know how to do so, discover how to get the extension of Helium 10 for free.
Or simply download the Helium 10 extension right now and install it yourself.
Once you launch the Chrome extension, it will scan the entire marketplace and list all the relevant ASINs in a window pop-up.
Start using Xray to pinpoint profitable opportunities by sorting out results.
For example, remove the sponsored products (even though they don’t affect the overall numbers), and see how the people with low review counts are doing.
If you see people with lower review counts make a buck, and if the sales are not only taken by a few top products, it’s a good sign. That’s pretty much what happened in the video that this article is based on.
Hence to my surprise, I discovered that the "Mermaid Party Supplies" market is a thriving one, with sales distributed among several vendors rather than just a few.
Step 3: Diving Deep into Niches via Helium 10 Black Box
In this section, I will share how to use the Black Box to find the "Niche" and "Products in the Niche.”
As I shared in the preceding section, I found the niche "Mermaid Party Supplies" attractive, so let's analyze it closely.
Try to broaden your scope and generalize the niche.
But how can you do that, any guesses? By taking the specific keyword out! And what would that be? "Mermaid," right! The prefix "Mermaid" makes the niche themed, therefore removing it results in the broad keyword "Party Supplies," which encompasses all party-related products.
If you still don't get it, let's look at another example...
If the niche is "Commercial Kitchen Supplies," its specific keyword would be "Commercial" and generic keyword would be "Kitchen Supplies." Why? Because kitchenware can also be domestic, no?
Now let's get back to our niche and open Helium 10 Black Box again. Select the “Niche” button, and input “Party Supplies” as your keyword. This way, you can filter products that match your target market. Here are the filters that I added:
Monthly Revenue: 5000 - Max
Review Count: 5 - 25
Shipping Size Tier: Small Standard Size and Large Standard Size
The search results showed 35 products, including Mermaid Party Supplies, Hawaiian Party Supplies, and Shark Party Supplies. There were also many other types of supplies but I found these few intriguing.
Now, when I clicked on "Hawaiian Party Supplies" to assess its marketplace, I noticed that despite quite a few reviews, its sellers were making very good money.
Next, I dove deep into the Shark Party Supplies niche and observed the same trend as Hawaiian and Mermaid Party Supplies. The sellers in this niche were pulling out $3000-$4000 with almost any amount of reviews.
And you might be surprised to know that a seller with only 17 ratings was raking in a stunning $48,000 every month. Cool, no?
In the same way, you can analyze other niches that come up in your search results. Then make mental notes on how they connect to the ones we've already covered.
Another way to discover small niches inside larger ones is by using the Amazon Search Box. Simply input the keyword along with a letter – for example, q, w, or r – or press the spacebar, and related searches will automatically appear.
A few examples will help you understand better:
Party Supplies [space]
Party supplies for kids/ for girls/ for adults/ rose gold, etc.
Party Supplies w
Party Supplies wedding/ Winnie the pooh, etc.
The list goes the same way for other letters.
Likewise, you can choose any niche and then use Black Box and Xray to unveil the products that fit your criteria.
The next step, after settling on a product, is to sell it to potential customers. Here's a video that explains how to rank products on the first page of Amazon. So when you enter the niche to begin selling, it will help you be at the top of your competition.

Let's Wind Up…
Hopefully, you've got the hang of it. :)
With the right tool and strategy, such as those provided by Helium 10 Black Box, you can easily locate untapped markets on Amazon and capitalize on them.
Set the criteria for the keyword and after you find one, input that to search for related niches. After that, find that niche on Amazon to unveil the products and use the Xray tool to discover their profitability opportunity and average revenue and sales.
The other way to find niches discussed above is via Amazon Search Box. You have to input the broad niche name and then add space or a letter; related smaller ones will appear in the suggested search ideas dropbox.
